First Coast Chapter Blessings in a Backpack provides school-aged children with food on weekends during the school year. We are a 501 c(3) private, non-profit organization feeding over 4,000 kids in schools across St. Johns and Duval County every weekend.
Did you know 1 in 5 kids here in Duval and St. Johns Counties won’t have enough food to eat this weekend? These are kids who will eat meals at school during the week but are without access to affordable, nutritious food on Saturday and Sunday. The consequences are much more than a growling stomach. Hunger can cause many physical health problems. It can also shorten a child’s attention span, lower their IQ, and keep them from making good grades.
Why We Do It:
The backpacks are filled with ready-to-eat nutritional food items such as granola bars, peanut butter, tuna, crackers, cereal, meat and cheese sticks, oatmeal, etc.
Blessings in a Backpack reviews its standard menu with a nutritionist annually to make sure the food is kid-friendly, nutritious, non-perishable, and easy-to-prepare.
What We Provide:
Students who participate in the Blessings in a Backpack program show marked improvement in test scores, behavior, school attendance and health.
Visit the Get Involved section to find out the various ways in which you can help Blessings in a Backpack feed more children.
There are 90,000 children in NE Florida who are at risk of hunger.
Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans and lower academic achievement.
Kids can't learn on an empty stomach - and shouldn't have to.
